The Embassy of Ireland, Beijing, is pleased to announce the holding of an Irish Cultural Festival in Beijing, which will run from 10 to 19 March 2010. A number of artists are receiving funding from Culture Ireland, the Irish State agency that promotes the best of Ireland’s arts and culture internationally, and the Irish Literature Exchange.
The festival will draw upon a wide range of disciplines, including Irish traditional dance; traditional Irish music, classical music, the visual arts, including photographic art and multimedia; theatre; literature and poetry.
Exact timings for all these events and updates on new confirmed acts will be posted in the coming weeks on www.discoverireland.com and on this website.

Highlights of the Festival:
Irish Ball
This is the social highlight of the year in Beijing and will take place this year on the evening of Saturday, 13 March at the Kerry Centre Hotel.
Parade
An outdoor festival will kick off with a parade in Chaoyang Park at 1.30pm on 14 March 2010. An occasion not to be missed. There will be many musical acts participating, including traditional Irish music and dance, harpist, and a rock group. Please wear green! There will also be facepainters available before the parade (come early to avoid disappointment).

Open-air concert at Chaoyang Park
Following the parade, there will be a variety of Irish cultural performances on stage and the surrounding area directly opposite the East Gate of Chaoyang Park. Events will include traditional Irish musicians, singers and dancers; poetry, drama, tourism and education promotions. There will also be lots of fun activities for children. Start time: 13:30pm on 14 March. Please note that there is a nominal entry fee into Chaoyang Park. Adults: 10RMB.
Music Recital
Cathal Breslin, a noted pianist will give a recital at the Embassy of Ireland at 7pm on Wednesday, 10 March. If interested in attending please contact Therese Healy (contact details above) for more information.
Born in Derry, in Northern Ireland, a growing international career has taken Cathal to critically acclaimed performances in Concert Halls throughout Europe, U.S.A. and Asia. Recent solo recitals have been in Florida, Ohio, California, Michigan and Texas; Hong Kong, Japan; throughout Spain, Italy, Greece, Germany, Austria, Bulgaria, Poland and Portugal.

This event will feature among others ‘Talking Trees’ by Fion Gunn & Pan Yiqun, ‘Woven Space’ by Audrey Mullins, ‘Salt River’ by Mullins & Gunn and ‘Structural Stories’ by Gunn & Zheng Xuewu.
In addition there will be an interactive installation the ‘Knitted River’ which will run across the space parallel to the ‘Salt River’ on which people can place origami boats.
Among the other installations on show will be installations in which Irish and Chinese artists are working collaboratively. Many of the planned installations will use Irish materials and are based on Irish landscape, architecture & traditional icons.

‘Paper Links’ a collaborative exhibition of 2D and 3D artworks on paper by Irish and Chinese artists. The exhibition will explore the theme of landscape and the built environment.
The work will be exhibited in a domestic setting with sculptures displayed on exquisite traditional Chinese furniture at the SiNordic Arts Space which is owned and run by Josef Feng who was cultural adviser to the Beijing Olympics.
